About the camera

The camera is on the roof of Hotel Talas, on the east side of Central Square, and looks west across the square towards Government House. The mountains of the Talas Alatau are on the left of the picture.

Forecasters use the picture to judge cloud, precipitation, visibility and haze over the city centre. The marks for visibility are Government House (about 350 m) and the ridge of the Talas Alatau (about 25 km). When the ridge cannot be seen on a dry day, the air over the city is usually poor; see the air quality index.

The camera was installed in March 2011 with the help of the hotel. Pictures are not archived. If the camera is out of order, the page says so until the picture comes back.
